While we're on the topic of wikis .... I have a list of libraries that use the del.icio.us social bookmarking tool. ( http://angelacw.wordpress.com/2007/06/04/delicious-libraries/ )

As more and more libraries are sending me their links, it's becoming high maintenance.

I was thinking of moving the list to a wiki, where the submitting libraries can add and edit their links accordingly.

Is there any other possible solutions other than a wiki?

I'm worried about losing ownership of my content, but at the same time I'd like to hand over content management to the submitting libraries. A wiki sounds like the best solution, but I'm wondering if there might be something else that fits my needs?

Hi Angela, great feature request. A link has been added at the top of the page (when you are logged in), beside your PM messages indicator that will now link to a listing of all current forum members. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Hi Roger, Take a look at Wetpaint Wiki software -- http://press.wetpaint.com/

I have not used it yet, but it does have the ability to create private wikis and a social networking component.

Personally, I would say that data integrity and data management fall more closely under information management than knowledge management. And while information management and knowledge management certainly complement one another, I'd hesitate to say that they're the same thing, or even that one was subsumed under the other.

In a sense, organizational change may not always be the desired outcome. While employees sometimes get into bad habits, they usually have a good reason for doing things the way they do. Perhaps you never tell so-and-so down the hall anything, because you know they cannot keep things to themselves.

Even this is a type of information exchange (or in that case, not exchanging information). It's good to keep in mind that organizational change is not always desirable, and is, in many cases, going to create more problems than it solves.

I personally do not think it makes much sense to build your own collaboration platform. I have to also say that I have seen instances where programs such as MSN Messenger became more popular than any organizationally-sponsored collaboration solution. Unless you have an idea for something that has never been done before (which is rarely the case), don't build. Buy.

I did not know there were so many free software packages out there. Thank you for the link.

Our team has not really thought much about the amount of content we were going to generate, and I think based on your comments, we should give that some more thought. Perhaps we should be looking at a CMS with wiki capabilities instead of the other way round?

Thanks for your thoughts Luke.

There often seems to be a divide between leadership's vision and the employees' daily grind to make that vision happen. Any thoughts on how employees can lead an organization to enact changes in daily information exchange practices before a crisis happens and leadership is forced to respond? Or is organizational change, much like organizational culture, impossible to alter?

Good question Stephanie. At work, I think people generally want to feel like they're 'following the rules'. This seems to be a natural inclination to not be perceived as being a bad employee, but often, people also follow rules that they perceive as being implicit rather than explicit.

People actually do share a great deal of information during the day, but usually it's only in small, closed networks. For example, I might email human resources to figure out how to fill out a form, not understand their answer, and call a friend at work to ask them how to do it.

So I think the real problem is that there are no mechanisms for getting that feedback to HR. HR never knows that their answer is hard to understand, so they keep giving out the same answer.

An audit of business processes and perceptions within the organization is a big, ugly and necessary thing to do. But there's really no point in doing the audit unless the organization is actually willing to change (usually organizations only become willing to change after a major crisis, much like individuals).

Hi Roger - Wikipedia has a good list of free software packages. Although I would also suggest that if you're going to be creating a significant amount of content, a content management system might be a good idea.

It's always easier to start with the content management system in place, and then have a consistent way to manage your content. Otherwise, you start generating lots of stuff that managed in ad hoc, inconsistent ways, and you have to go back later and figure out how to manage it all. I hope that helps.

Why do you think the so-called "professional" work environment seems to discourage informal information exchange and how do we move away from the territorial feel of following the "official" information exchange process?

Does anyone have any suggestions for resources or have any ideas on this topic? I would think that buying a collaboration solution would usually be the better option (third-party vendor support and all that), but are there ever any compelling reasons to build your own in-house collaboration solution?

If one were trying to get a wiki started... where would one search for resources or information about wikis? I don't really know where to begin.

Were looking for free software ideally or something that we could use within a very simple corporate intranet (we don't have any CMS installed). Anyone know of anything?
