Does anyone have any suggestions for resources or have any ideas on this topic? I would think that buying a collaboration solution would usually be the better option (third-party vendor support and all that), but are there ever any compelling reasons to build your own in-house collaboration solution?

Collaborative workspaces: build or buy?

I personally do not think it makes much sense to build your own collaboration platform. I have to also say that I have seen instances where programs such as MSN Messenger became more popular than any organizationally-sponsored collaboration solution. Unless you have an idea for something that has never been done before (which is rarely the case), don't build. Buy.
